Aldi to open 100 new stores in UK over next two years and its looking in Leicestershire – Leicestershire Live

Aldi has named the locations in Leicestershire where it is considering building new stores as part of a multi-billion pound UK expansion.

The celebrated budget retailer is looking at sites accross the city and county after revealing it will open 100 new supermarkets over the next two years – creating thousands of new jobs.

The German grocer already has popular stores in Coalville, Ashby, Melton, Hinckley, Loughborough and at Leicester’s St George’s Retail Park and Woodgate.

It also opened a new store in Rugby Road, Lutterworth, this August.

Aldi, which now has more than 920 stores across the UK, is said it is searching for “freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites” suitable for property development.

The firm has pledged to invest £13 billion by 2023 in a bid to “further grow its retail estate”.

The move would see it make a significant step in continuing to muscling in on the traditional ‘big four’ supermarkets of Sainsbury’s, Asda, Tesco and Morrisons.

It also said it would be continuing its plans to open an average of one new store a week.

The areas in Leicestershire where it is currently looking for sites include Oadby, Leicester and the Knighton area of the city specifically.

But places such as Barwell, Earl Shilton, Evington, Coalville, Mounsorrel and Enderby are also under consideration.

The supermarket says it is on the lookout for sites that are “big enough to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store and around 100 dedicated parking spaces” – preferably on a prominent main road and with good visibility and access.

Additionally, Aldi UK said it will also be investing in the development of new and expanded distribution centres.

Its communications director, Richard Thornton, said: “We’re continuing to gain even more customers – with over 60 per cent of UK households shopping with Aldi in the last year.
