Birmingham German Christmas Market 2021 announces dates – and its coming much earlier – Birmingham Live

Birmingham’s German Christmas Market is making a comeback in 2021.

The city council had earlier said it started planning for the festive extravaganza in New Street and Victoria Square at the start of the year.

The event, known more formally as Frankfurt Christmas Market Birmingham, is the largest authentic German Christmas market outside Germany or Austria and the centrepiece of the city’s festive calendar – but had to be cancelled in 2020 for the first time ever.

At the time, Kurt Stroscher, Frankfurt City Council’s Director of Festivals and Events, who organises the market each year, said: “We will now concentrate all our efforts on 2021 in order to return with an impressive Christmas market in its recognisable form.”

A Birmingham City Council spokeswoman said in May this year: “Planning for this year’s Frankfurt Christmas Market began in January. This is the case every year, given the complex logistics involved.”

The dates for Birmingham German Market

The 2021 dates have now been confirmed by the council.

It will take place from November 4 until December 23 – meaning the market is coming much earlier than in many previous years.

Dates vary each year but it’s generally here for five to six weeks and usually closes just before Christmas so traders can get home to be with their families.

The 2018 dates were Thursday, November 15, to Sunday, December 23.

And the 2017 dates were Thursday, November 16 to Sunday, December 24.

It did stay longer in 2016 when Birmingham was celebrating 50 years of twinning with Frankfurt. That year it ran until December 29.

The 2019 dates were November 7 to December 23 so it will be only the second time it has been here in the first week of November, and the 2021 date is the earliest ever for its arrival in the city.

What will the opening times be?

Birmingham’s German Christmas Market will open along New Street and Victoria Square from 10am to 9pm every day. That has been the case for many years.

However, on Remembrance Sunday the market usually changes its times and is open from 1pm to 9pm.

Weekends tend to be the busiest times – great if you enjoy a bustling atmosphere but it can get very crowded.

Weekdays are less hectic though it can get very busy in the middle of the day (from noon to 2pm when office workers go there in their lunch break).

It experiences a second busy spell after 5pm on weekday evenings, up until about 7.30pm, as people stop for a drink and a bite to eat on their way home from work in the city centre.
