Greggs aims to do battle with Cornwalls pasties in Truro city centre – Cornwall Live

It was long thought that British bakery institution Greggs would never dare cross the Tamar and take on the might of the Cornish pasty, but the Newcastle-based chain has applied for planning permission to open a third branch in Cornwall.

And while its first two shops in Cornwall are tucked away at Penngyllam Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Launceston and Cornwall Services by the A30, this is the biggest move by the doyens of doughnuts yet.

Planning signs have appeared on the boarded-up former Co-op and Bristol & West bank in St Nicholas Street, Truro, within drooling distance of Cornish pasty makers Rowe’s and Warrens.

Greggs has applied for a new hardwood and glazed shopfront, to replace a rear window with new security door on the rear elevation, two new condenser units in a security cage and to reuse existing extract vents.

There is an additional application for a fascia sign, one projecting sign and two internal TV promotional screens.

Greggs has opened its second branch in Cornwall, in Launceston, in the summer of 2020 following its return to Cornwall in October 2019, when it opened an outlet at Cornwall Services by the A30.

In 2019 an ill-fated shop next to Carkeel Roundabout at Saltash closed after seven months of trading, having failing crack the local pasty market.
