When there are no lorry drivers, people notice: petrol stations run out, supermarket shelves go empty and medicine deliveries are late.

What is less obvious is that there are more than a million job vacancies across Britain — the highest number on record — in areas ranging from care to construction and from finance to fruit-picking.

Many have been quick to blame Brexit for sending European workers home but that is only part of the problem: the pandemic has also caused drastic changes.
