Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has announced a drastic change that will affect all shoppers.

The retailer has said it’s making a drastic change to the way people shop in supermarkets.

Sainsbury’s is overhauling its loyalty scheme in a move that could freeze out its existing Nectar card and get customers up to 30% off their spend.

Currently the supermarket lets shoppers collect points on a Nectar loyalty card every time they shop, which can be swapped for discounts at Sainsbury’s and other retailers like Argos.

But now Sainsbury’s says the next step in its loyalty scheme will be ‘My Nectar Prices’ – discounts using the Nectar smartphone app.

From September 22 Nectar app users can get discounts on the items they buy most often.

Over the course of a year, shoppers could save around £200 in total.

The idea is that Nectar knows what you buy most often – according to the Mirror.

It will soon start offering you personalised discounts on these items. The discounts will be available for between weeks and months.

To get the discount shoppers will need to use the Sainsbury’s SmartShop self-scanning service.

The supermarket says customers will be offered up to 30% off products, and weekly Sainsbury’s shoppers could save £200 a year, although this depends on how much you’re using it.

Bear in mind a loyalty club should not be the sole reason you shop at any supermarket – always compare prices across brands and retailers and do your research to ensure you’re getting the best value for money.

Sainsbury’s said more details of the scheme would be announced on September 22.

But it’s bad news for checkout staff, as it will reduce the amount of manned checkouts needed.

Sainsbury’s chief marketing officer Mark Given said: “We’re always looking for new ways to offer our customers the best value and we’re thrilled to be launching My Nectar Prices.

“What’s great about My Nectar Prices is that customers’ discounts will be tailored to personally suit each shopper based on their previous shopping habits, meaning they will receive discounted prices on products they love and frequently use.”

Sainsbury’s has been tinkering with its Nectar loyalty scheme this year.

In July, the chain gave shoppers extra Nectar points on fruits and vegetables purchased over the course of the month.

The supermarket said customers could potentially earn over 750 points depending on how often they took part in the promotion.

It comes after the supermarket revamped the Nectar loyalty scheme in 2019 to give shoppers weekly, personalised bonus points based on what they usually buy in store.
