Sainsburys introduces 30p charge for service for drivers that used to be free – Kent Live

Regular customers at Sainsbury’s may well be annoyed by a new charge coming in to effect at the supermarket giant’s stores.

Shoppers with cars are now being asked to pay 30p for a service that used to be free – in a move that’s proven unpopular with consumers.

Anyone wanting to put air in their tyres will no longer be able to do so free of charge.

The supermarket giant used to offer air for free at its stations.

But now drivers must fork out for it – and free water has also been replaced, with punters charged £1 for a screen wash.

Drivers have criticised the move in interviews with national media publications, according to Birmingham Live.

Morrisons, Tesco and Asda complete the so called Big Four, with each offering petrol and diesel pumps.

One driver told The Sun newspaper: “Had to pay twice for air on your new money grabbing machine as three mins isn’t enough for Land Rover tyres.

“Given the profits you lot make it’s pathetic that you are charging for this. Won’t buy fuel there again.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “We regularly review the services we provide our customers.

“We have invested in the facilities at our petrol filling stations, offering a variety of services including screen wash air towers and contactless payment options, offering even more convenience for our customers.”
