The zero food hygiene rated restaurants, takeaways and other businesses in Wales – Wales Online

Twenty restaurants, takeaways, food stores and other businesses in Wales have been given a zero in their latest food hygiene inspections.

Working on behalf of the Food Standards Agency, inspectors from local city and county councils regularly visit all the eateries and vendors selling food in their city, district or county and check that each business is complying with food laws and producing food that is safe to eat.

They record their findings and share them with each business and with the public through the Food Standards Agency website.

Each business or vendor is thoroughly assessed, with a full report shared with the business-owner, and given an overall ‘food hygiene rating’ out of five, with five being the highest and zero being the lowest.

A food hygiene rating of five means food standards at the premises are “very good,” four means “good,” three means “generally satisfactory,” two means “some improvement is necessary,” one means “major improvement necessary” and zero means “urgent improvement necessary”.

What do food hygiene inspectors check?

Authorised officers look at:

  • the business premises
  • how staff work
  • the food safety management system
  • the types of food staff make and prepare

They also pay particular attention to each business’s:

  • Hygienic food handling: including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage
  • Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building: i ncluding having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand-washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene
  • Management of food safety: system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future

They then record their findings and share them with the business they have visited, and report them to the Food Standards Agency, where they are published online.

How often are premises inspected?

The Food Standards Agency explains: “Authorised officers may visit premises for several reasons, including: food hygiene and food standards inspections, sampling, complaint follow-up, advisory visits.

“They have the right to enter and inspect premises at any reasonable time. Authorised officers will usually arrive without making an appointment.

“How often [a] business is routinely inspected will depend on the type of business and its previous record. Some premises might be inspected at least every six months, others much less often.

“Authorised officers will offer help and advice on food safety. They can take action if they find that [a business’] standards of food hygiene are not good enough. In serious cases, action might include closing the premises or prosecution.”
